The first details on the sequel to 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie have reportedly been revealed, giving us a clue as to when production is aiming to begin.
As noted by ComicBook, the BC Film Commission reports that the sequel to 2020’s box office smash hit Sonic the Hedgehog will begin production early next year, though this has yet to be confirmed by any other party.
It’s claimed that the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel is currently codenamed “Emerald Hill,” and will be an in-house production from Red Energy Films. It’s believed that the movie will officially enter production between March 15th 2021 and May 10th 2021.
Without giving any spoilers away, during the closing moments of the 2020 movie we saw the return of a beloved fan-favourite character, and with the added fact that the movie was surprisingly good, many fans are super-excited for this sequel.
At this time, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel is aiming to release in cinemas on April 8th, 2022.
However, with the COVID-19 pandemic still likely to be a major factor as we head towards 2021, I wouldn’t be surprised if that release date slipped back a little at some point.
Speaking of the global pandemic, 2020 was the first time since 2009 that superhero powerhouse Marvel did not release a new flick in cinemas, which meant that the blue speedy hedgehog was 2020’s biggest box office superhero.
The Sonic movie released earlier this year and officially ended Marvel’s reign of top-grossing superhero movies by scoring big at the box office. Will Sonic’s success continue with the upcoming sequel, or did the global pandemic play an instrumental role in pushing the live-action movie to success?
