The classic PS2/Xbox game Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance is now available on modern consoles in the form of a new port.
The remastered version of the action RPG will feature a 4K resolution, while the rest of the game remains the same as it was on sixth-generation consoles.
Released back in 2001, Balder’s Gate: Dark Alliance is a spin-off of the mainline Balder’s Gate series, based on the Dungeons and Dragons universe. Here’s a back of the box synopsis from a copy of the PS2 version I had lying around:
“Experience the massively popular world of Baldur’s Gate as never before. Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance thrusts you into an epic adventure filled with intense action, intricate puzzles and sinister intrigue; where your mastery of cold steel and devastating spells is the only thing between you and ultimate evil.”
Compared to the original Baldur’s Gate series, Dark Alliance is a much more accessible game with hack ‘n’ slash mechanics and lighter RPG elements. While the game resonated with critics when it was originally released, this new version of the game will likely appeal to new players who have recently just got into D&D.
Just in case you’re confused, it’s worth mentioning that it isn’t the same game as the upcoming action RPG Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance.
While the latter is a spiritual successor to the classic PS2 era hack ‘n’ slash, the new Dark Alliance game features four-player co-op and God of War-style perspective. In contrast to this, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance features an isometric perspective and bears a resemblance to the likes of a Diablo game.
