AMD rumored to launch Zen3 based Ryzen Threadripper 5000 (Chagall) in August –

Please note that this post is tagged as a rumor.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 5000 in August?

A fourth-generation Trhreadripper not soon.

AMD has not revealed its official plans for Ryzen Threadripper 5000 yet, despite numerous virtual events taking place in the last few months. The Zen3 based high-performance desktop (HEDT) series has already been expected since AMD introduced its Vermeer (AM4 Zen3) series back in November last year. The last Threadripper series was introduced in July 2020 – those were AMD’s new Threadripper PRO series which only made its way to the DIY market last month. However, the last non-PRO series was launched in November 2019, which means AMD has not updated its HEDT lineup for nearly 16 months.

The next-gen Threadripper series codenamed “Chagall” is expected to be compatible with current TRX40 motherboards, thus motherboard makers are currently waiting for a new AGESA firmware update with Chagall support, not to mention the actual engineering samples. The fact that those were not distributed yet, might confirm the rumor that the launch date is pushed back.

A known leaker KittyYYuko (whom some of our readers may still remember as KittyCorgi) has said on Twitter: “In addition, in August AMD will release a new generation ThreadRipper processor”. This is the first rumored date that we have heard for Threadripper 5000, but we do not know if this date is correct.

According to our information, AMD had some trouble with Zen3 based Threadripper development. The engineering samples that were tested a few weeks ago were not providing the same performance uplift as the AM4 desktop CPU series. For that reason many board partners currently do not have any information on Threadripper 5000 development, they are still waiting for an update from AMD if the series is still planned.

What might be interesting is that HWinfo recently received an update which said that the software will now be able to detect next-generation AMD Threadripper:

> Improved detection of AMD ThreadRipper PRO and next generation ThreadRipper.

It is unclear if the update relies only on early CPUID information or that the software developer has access to the embargoed information that might confirm Ryzen Threadripper 5000 is launching in the coming months.
