Starbreeze is partnering with Koch Media to co-publish Payday 3, which is due to launch in 2023. It’s fantastic news, as the future of Payday was very uncertain just a few weeks ago.
The deal is estimated to have cost around €50 million and covers both the game’s development and marketing [via gamesinudtsry.biz]. Koch Media will also be involved in at least 18 months of post-launch support, including marketing and content.
In a statement, Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren announced the partnership while expressing confidence in Payday 3’s future:
“In addition to securing the continued development, this deal secures global publishing of Payday 3 as well as the marketing efforts through the entire game life-cycle. We now have a strong foundation for a successful launch of Payday 3.”
Sjögren previously expressed that he hopes to bring the Payday franchise back with a bang. Starbreeze’s previous CEO, Andersson Klint, stepped down after the company suffered from financial difficulties back in 2018. Since then, Starbreeze has been focused on Payday 2, which has put the publisher in a position of growth.
Now that Payday 3 has a publisher, we could see the game release on consoles and PC in 2023. The project is now fully financed, thanks to Starbreeze’s partnership with Koch Media.
The German media company was acquired by Embracer Group in 2018. Embracer is a force to be reckoned with in the publishing industry, so Payday 3 is sure to get the launch it deserves.
As for Starbreeze, the company has come back from the brink of despair. In 2020, Starbreeze earned around €11.6 million in revenue, thanks to the Payday franchise.
Payday 2’s Steam community has over 7.1 million members. It’s now one of the platforms’ biggest. It’s been eight years since Payday 2 first launched, so Starbreeze’s next heist has been a long time coming.
