The PlayStation 5 Is The Fastest-Selling Console In US History

The PlayStation 5 is the fastest-selling console in US history in terms of dollar sales, according to a report by the NDP Group [via IGN].

The report shows that the Nintendo Switch was the best selling console of February 2021. It has been the best selling console for the past 27 months in the US, which is an extremely impressive feat. The PS5 was close behind the Switch in second place for the month.

However, the PS5 has surpassed the Switch somewhere else, snatching the title of the fastest-selling console in US history. The report has based its findings on the PS5’s “total dollar sales after four months in market”. Despite the PS5’s supply chain issues, the console has still managed to gain the feat of the best-selling console, which is something of a testament to its success.

The NDP report also states that the Nintendo Switch is the seventh best-selling platform overall, with sales surpassing the Nintendo DS. The Wii is still Nintendo’s best-selling console, but the Nintendo Switch comes in as a close second.

Consumer spending when it comes to video games is also on the rise. The NDP report provides the following analysis when it comes to video game sales:

“February 2021 consumer spending across video game hardware, content, and accessories reached a February record $4.6 billion, 35% higher when compared to a year ago. Year-to-date spending totalled $9.3 billion, 39% higher than the same period in 2020.”

The increase in video game-related sales could be to do with the ongoing pandemic, as people are spending more time indoors. In terms of actual video games, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury takes the lead for February 2021, followed by Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Persona 5: Strikers.

It’s worth noting that the current situation surrounding PS5 availability and console resellers could be affecting the game sales of the console. Thousands of PS5 units are potentially sitting in storage, awaiting resale, so the console’s sales may not match the demand for PS5 software. Whether or not this will change once the console is more widely available remains to be seen.
