Egyptologists are using the Discovery Tour mode in Assassin’s Creed: Origins to teach ancient Egyptian history [via The Gamer].
The Discovery Tour mode was first introduced in Assassin’s Creed: Origins. It’s since appeared in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey (ancient Greece), and will also be coming to Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla later in this year.
The Discovery Tour is developed by Ubisoft in collaboration with renowned historians and is completely combat and quest-free.
Discovery Tour is kinda like a virtual museum. It even comes with your very own personal tour guide thanks to audio commentary from historians that specialise in the subject at hand. Best of all, The Discovery Tour is free for those that own the game.
Personally, I love just chilling out playing The Discovery Tour learning about ancient history and my son has even used it to research his school homework.
So it doesn’t surprise me whatsoever that Egyptologists are using The Discovery Tour of Assassin’s Creed: Origins to teach ancient Egyptian history. After all, this mode was developed with the qualified insight of fellow Egyptologists.
In the first episode of a new Twitch series, Egyptologist Dr. Chris Naunton was joined by associate professor of history at Missouri University of Science and Technology, Dr. Kate Sheppard, and Southampton University Ph.D. student Gemma Renshaw.
The Twitch show will be a six-part series that explores and dissects the history of ancient Egypt with the first episode called “Playing in the Past.” Essentially, it’ll be teaching people more about ancient Egypt with the help of the game.
During the premiere episode, Dr. Chris Naunton described The Discovery Tour of Assassin’s Creed: Origins as “the best visualisation of ancient Egypt” he has seen and was impressed by the level of dedication to historical detail from Ubisoft.
Playing in the Past series will run until July 15th and the next episode will air on April 8th at 3pm UK time.
