The survival game Terraria is collaborating with PewDiePie on a new line of merchandise, including T-shirts, stickers and figurines, but it’s already causing controversy.
The new merch line, dubbed PewDiePie x Terraria, is available through the official Terraria online store, and features designs based on the longstanding YouTuber.
The collab was announced via Terraria’s Twitter, alongside a promotional image and logo:
However, it appears that fans are divided when it comes to the controversial collab. The announcement was quickly hit with backlash from gamers, many of whom expressed concern over Terraria’s association with PewDiePie.
The controversial PewDiePie has a history of making inappropriate and offensive jokes and comments which have landed him in hot water in the past.
Kjellberg’s highly controversial status has caused a bit of a stir within the Terraria community, with many fans clashing over whether the collaboration should have happened. You can find some of the reactions to the collab in the tweets below.
While the Terraria community appears to be up in arms about the whole affair, it’s unclear whether the collaboration will affect the game’s reputation. The PewDiePie project could bring new players to the game, but it could also drive existing players away.
The YouTuber became associated with Terraria after making the switch from Minecraft. PewDiePie claims that he ran out of things to do in the Mojang builder, which brought the YouTube series to an end.
Terraria is, in many ways, like a 2D version of Minecraft, so it’s easy to see why the YouTuber made the transition. Terraria will be ten years old come May, so it’s impressive to see the game still going strong.
