Intel Alder Lake-S with 8 cores and 16 threads
A new Alder Lake CPU is making the rounds.
Intel’s 12th Gen Core series is not expected to hit the market until the fourth quarter this year. By the time it launches, many leaks are still expected to surface. Leaks that will ultimately tell us how competitive the Golden Cove architecture is in comparison to AMD Zen3 and maybe even Zen4 architectures.
On Geekbench (which appears to be an epicenter of all leaks) there is a new sample of Alder Lake-S CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads. This configuration hasn’t really been seen that much. The reason why this is interesting is that it’s a ‘pure’ BIG core implementation. Intel Alder Lake will feature Hybrid Technology which means that the CPU will be split between high efficiency (small) and high performance (big) cores. This particular sample would only offer big cores.
Geekbench recently received an update to support Alder Lake and Rocket Lake CPUs. The software now recognizes the LGA1700 socket as well as DDR5 memory, although the frequency of the memory is not yet correctly read.

The sample has 8 big cores and no small cores. Such a configuration is exclusive to the Alder Lake-S desktop series, it is not expected to launch for the mobile Alder Lake-P platform. According to previous leaks, this sample would feature GT1 graphics, which are expected to offer at least 24 Execution Units.

Moving on to the most interesting part of this leak. The CPU was paired with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card and tested in OpenCL benchmark. While this synthetic benchmark is definitely not the best indicator of gaming performance, it certainly can be compared to existing results to draw some conclusions.

The official OpenCL ranking page has an average score of 106101 points for GeForce RTX 2080, which means that this particular sample not only does not bottleneck the GPU but it is also marginally faster. The reason why this is important is that we are probably looking at a very early engineering sample (either ES1 or ES2). Intel is not expected to ship qualification samples (QS) until at least summer this year. Those who have been following upcoming Rocket Lake-S leaks at Geekbench should know that ES performance can be very different from QS units.

Intel Alder Lake will feature a new rectangular package and a new pinout for the LGA1700 socket. The platform will shift to DDR5 and PCIe Gen5, which will mean a complete upgrade. The 12th Gen Core series will also be Intel’s first 10nm desktop CPUs. The series will also feature enhanced SuperFin architecture, which is a further upgrade over mobile Tiger Lake’s SuperFin.
