Bloodborne’s eerie excellence has made it many players’ favourite game, both of the PS4 and all time. Despite this, the game is locked to 30 frames per second, meaning that the experience is starting to feel slightly antiquated. Thanks to the work of a talented modder, Bloodborne can now unofficially be played at 60 FPS on modded PlayStation consoles. Slaying has never felt slicker [via Kotaku].
The mod’s creator, Lance McDonald, already has a legacy of projects under his belt, with work on the likes of P.T and Nier: Automata. McDonald first unveiled his plans to patch the PS4 horror RPG back in 2020, suggesting that he’d publish the patch if Sony failed to do so itself.
“I’ll be releasing this patch publicly once the PlayStation 5 has released and Sony have made it clear whether or not Bloodborne will be enhanced on that system in any way. Out of respect for PlayStation, I want them to have the first chance to put 60 fps Bloodborne into the hands of players.”
Additional details can be found on the modders Patreon, which describes the technicalities behind the mod:
“I have build a utility that, when applied to a copy of Bloodborne v1.09 (the latest update), will modify the game engine in a way that allows most of the gameplay logic to run at arbitrary update speeds, increases the framerate cap to 60fps, and optionally lowers the rendering resolution to 1280×720.”
While the game’s increased frame rate comes at a cost to resolution, having a smoother gameplay experience probably has the upper hand in this case. The mod will work on any modded PS4, but it’s probably wise to use a PS4 Pro if you can.
The mod can be downloaded via Lance McDonald’s Patreon account, along with some additional instructions and advisories.
