Many Redditors have cashed in as a result of the recent GameStop “Stonks” situation, but one man has decided to donate his good fortune to charity. Yep, in today’s wholesome news, one wonderful human has used his GameStop earnings to buy Nintendo Switches for children in hospital.
That man is Hunter Kahn, a 20-year-old from Minnesota who recently cashed in on stocks thanks to the Reddit forum “Wall Street Bets”. After acquiring the payout, Khan purchased six Nintendo Switch consoles and a bunch of games, donating them to the Children’s Minnesota Hospital [via CBS].
In a conversation with CBS local, Kahn described how he felt about both the big cash in and donating to the good cause.
“It was a better feeling than waking up in the morning and seeing that [GameStop’s stock price] was on the moon,” he told the publication. “I love video games. I know it would be terrible being a kid in a hospital with like no joy helping them through.”
The self-professed gamer then went on to comment on the GameStop stock situation itself, insisting the following:
“A lot of people are saying that this is somewhat like a transfer of power, but if the money’s going from here just to the other side, there’s no difference if we just are acting the same way as the people that we’re criticizing. It’s important that we don’t become men in suits ourselves, and use our money for good.”
For many (if not most) Redditors currently riding the GameStop stock wave, this is a campaign for financial freedom. Many feel that Wall Street is inaccessible to the layman, with an established structure that is designed to cater to bankers and the rich alike.
Regardless of your take on the whole fiasco, it’s wonderful to see wealth being transferred into acts of generosity. The simple act of providing a children’s hospital with Nintendo Switches goes a long way, demonstrating that ultimately, gaming can be a force for good.
