Sony has teased that the upcoming HBO show based on The Last of Us is “just the beginning” for the beloved IP.
While it’s abundantly clear that Sony wants to extend its reach into film and TV, CEO Jim Ryan cemented the company’s intentions by claiming that their current projects are “Just the beginning”.
Speaking at CES 2021 [via ComicBook], Ryan had the following to say in regards to expanding their entertainment interests:
“This is just the beginning of the expansion of our storytelling into new media and even wider audiences. Sony is a creative entertainment company and entertainment has never been more important.”
Ryan also made reference to the upcoming Uncharted movie and HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, both of which have been praised as video games for their highly immersive narratives. Both these projects are set to have a star-studded cast, with Tom Holland filling the adventurous shoes of Nathan Drake.
It’s no secret that the PlayStation platform has some strong exclusives, most of which could be easily adapted to suit film or TV. With this in mind, we could see games like God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and Infamous receive a big-screen makeover.
Considering the cinematic qualities of modern video game experiences, it’s no surprise that Sony wants to cash in by bringing these stories to a wider audience.
God of War director Cory Barlog has previously expressed his interest in creating a TV series on Twitter, not to mention that recent attempts to do so, like Netflix’s Castlevania and The Witcher have proven to be instant hits.
It seems like the video game industry has finally recovered from the horrendous failures of the Super Mario Bros movie and other flicks that completely missed the mark with their audience.
Who knows, perhaps we’re in for a future where bad video game adaptations won’t exist… (Here’s looking at you, Prince of Persia).
